Sleipner is a high alloyed tool steel with a very broad properties profile. It is also a very good substrate steel for all types of surface treatments. This combination means that Sleipner is an extremely versatile conventional tool steel for medium run cold work tooling.
Mod: Sleipner is a superior alternative to W. No. 1.2379. The wide properties profile makes it suitable for almost all types of cold work applicati***.
Properties
The properties characteristics combine to give a very modern all-purpose steel for cold work tooling with advantages both for the tool user and the toolmaker. It has a mixed-abrasive/adhesive wear profile and a good resistance to chipping. Furthermore, the high hardness that can be obtained after high temperature tempering means that surface treatments such as nitriding or PVD can be made on a high strength substrate. Also, it means that complicated shapes with hardness levels > 60 HRC can be wire EDM and from blocks with relatively thick cross secti*** with a much reduced risk of cracking.
Sleipner has a better machinability and grindability and a better hardenability than a D2-type steel. The better hardenability means that Sleipner is particularly suitable for large tools.
Benefits
- Less chance of material mix ups, unified machining, grinding, EDM, heat treatment procedures and less stocking costs due to a reduction in the number of tool steel grades needed for medium run cold work applicati***
~The unique properties profile makes Sleipner useful for all types of cold work tooling
- Reduced maintenance and downtime costs and increased productivity due to a reduced risk for premature failures and longer intervals between regrinds
~The broad properties profile is particularly appropriate in applicati*** demanding high resistance to several failure mechani***s occurring at the same time, e.g. as in blanking and forming of ultra high strength sheets. In such applicati*** resistance to both abrasive and adhesive wear, resistance to chipping, resistance to plastic deformation and sometimes also some kind of surface treatment are required.
~Sleipner is a good substrate steel for all types of surface coatings
- Reduced toolmaking costs due to good machining, wire EDM and grinding properties compared with steels of the AISI D2/M2 -types and other similar high alloy cold work tool steels
