The China Driving License
The “International Driving License” is not accepted in China, but it is possible to convert your
home country's driver's license to a local one. There are various methods and levels of “hassle”
involved with this and the ease of this varies from city to city. This usually involves a
computerized test (***ailable in multiple languages) and in most cases, you are excused from the
actual driving test if you h***e a foreign license (1).
Here is what you need to do:
• Get your foreign driver's license translated into Chinese by an authorized translation service
before visiting the Administration (about 50RMB)
• Make sure you h***e all necessary documents (including passport, foreign driver's license,
license translation, temporary residence permit, work permit, and copies of everything). If you
think you MIGHT need it, bring it. If you've ever dealt with Chinese administrative proceedings,
you know it's best to be OVER-prepared.
• Upon Arrival, go to building #12 to get photographs taken (40RMB). You won't be able to use your
own photographs, as these special photos come printed with your name and ID number. There're also
photocopying services there if you need (1RMB per copy). (2)
• In the same building, you will h***e to take a simple health check complete with hearing and
vision test and a health form to fill out (60RMB)
• When the health check is done and stamped, you will then proceed to building #8 where your
documents are re-checked.
• Following this you will head to building #9 where you will schedule your computer-based test
date. You'll be given a slip of paper with your name, test date, and test time, and the website to
download the learning material ( http:// ) (2)
• On your test date/time, go to building #9 to take it. If you pass, you will be directed to a
slew of windows where you will fill out some documents, pay some money (55RMB), and eventually get
your license in about 10 minutes. If you fail, you can reschedule your test.
